In 1970s Burstyn was active in the movement to free convicted boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter from jail.

Burstyn was the first female president of "The Actor's Equity" from 1982-1985.

She was member of jury at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1977 and at the Cannes Film Festival in 1981.

In 2000, Ellen Burstyn was named co-president of The Actor's Studio, alongside Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel.

She was chosen by People Magazine as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in 2001.

In 2005, Ellen was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Acting of the Savannah Film Festival.

Burstyn practices Sufism.
